Our story …

This happened in my old firm …

One day the Managing Partner sent out a note to all partners. In the note he laid down his vision for where the firm would be in three to four years. He put figures on his vision. In other words, he spelled out what levels of profitability the firm was going to reach in three to four years.

This really caused a reaction. Many, if not most, of the partners found the figures aggressive, to say the least. The note had the heading “clear blue water” which was the name of the planned project.

What happened? The project was launched as intended. But because of the reaction, the clear blue water label was replaced by the much less poetic “Market Leadership”. This came to my mind when I started the cbw consultancy.

Clear blue water is originally a term from competitive rowing referring to an obvious gap between the leading boat and those following. Sometimes used figuratively for a project, they say in the dictionaries. Yes indeed.
